Tribal Council
One may call it government in government's purest form. Elected tribal leaders
must deal with issues on every possible level. That is the responsibility handed
to them and assumed by them when they are elected by the tribal membership. The
chairman or a council member may deal directly with the President of the United
States, or with the leaders of congress, or with the members of the president's
cabinet. The halls of congress and of the executive branch of the federal
government are familiar territory, but with the same elected tribal leaders must
return to the reservation and possibly be faced with a decision involving an
intra-family dispute. They steer their own ship of state, and in doing so, they
pray for wisdom.
