Programs
Below is a list of the programs that are implemented throughout the year to the Johnson O’Malley participants.
Please keep in mind that not all programs run throughout the entire year.
University of Idaho Tutoring Program
The Department of Education, in conjunction with the University of Idaho’s Service Learning Department,
has developed a program that allows college students the opportunity to work with Lakeside School District’s students and staff in the classrooms.
This program is designed to provide students with experienced and enthusiastic tutors who can utilize their educational background to aid students in completing daily homework assignments.
Beyond the tutoring, students will have the unique opportunity to learn about the tutors and comprehend what college life is like both academically and socially.
Dual Enrollment
The Department of Education, in conjunction with North Idaho College (NIC) and Lakeside High School, is proud to offer Coeur d’Alene Tribal members, and direct descendants,
the opportunity to take their education to the next level and enroll in dual enrollment courses.
Dual enrollment courses are college courses that count as both a high school and college credit.
These classes are offered at Lakeside High School, Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s Tribal Institute, and/or North Idaho College. To enroll in these classes,
a student must meet with their high school counselor, meet the required GPA, and enroll directly with NIC.
If you are interest please contact us or your local high school counselor.
Funding is available for those who qualify.
Bridge Programs
Throughout the year, students are introduced to opportunities to experience education outside of the Plummer-Worley area, such as health camps,
science camps, and other various programs. All students are provided a hard copy of the program, an introduction to what the program is about,
and the opportunity to participate. In addition, flyers, emails, and letters are sent to parents to inform them of the opportunities that arise.
Academic/Career Fair
Every year, the Department of Education, in conjunction with GEAR UP and Lakeside High School, puts on an Academic/Career Fair. The event generally takes place in the LHS gymnasium and caters to Lakeside Middle/High School, Coeur d’Alene Tribal School, and the community. Participants of this event include various colleges/universities, professional-technical institutes, Tribal businesses/departments and local businesses. This event offer the community a glimpse the career opportunities that are possible with post-secondary education.
College Preparation
One of the most important aspects of the Johnson O’Malley is the college exposure and preparation program. Throughout the year, the Department of Education, with collaboration with Lakeside High School, prepares and funds tours of various college/university. This exposure to these institutes allows students to get a feel for what it feels like to be on both large and small campuses. To ensure we reach as many colleges/universities as possible, Johnson O’Malley also invites the colleges/universities to come and present in front of the student body.
In addition, the Johnson O’Malley Coordinator provides juniors and seniors the opportunity to prep for and take both the ACT and SAT exams.
The Department of Education not only pays for the exam, but also provides transportation to the test site.
Students enrolled in the Johnson O’Malley program receive one-on-one counseling to help students decide what college/university is best for them.
They will also receive help with finding and completing admission applications, FAFSA, and scholarships from the Internet.
